No Exit is a play about the danger of choosing cruelty over kindness, a warning against the worst impulses of humanity. The characters in this play know that they're in Hell and that, despite their denial or protests, they deserve to be there. The central conceit of this design is that the characters are us, humanity, and that they are brought out of the audience, out of Earth, through the hellmouth's gaping maw, and deposited into the world of the play, into Hell. The door which traps them there is in the fourth wall, invisible to us but immutable to them. It opens only four times, allowing a stream of light into their room, and never again.
